120 sharpening stone, Kuromaku SHAPTON K0701 white
Code: SHA-K0701Product detailed description
SHAPTON Kuromaku - Japanese sharpening stone with JIS #120 grit, white colour
The Japanese water stone manufacturer Shapton from Nabatame in Tochigi Prefecture is known for producing some of the hardest sharpening stones in the world. Compared to almost any other brand, Shapton stones tend to stay flatter for longer and need much less frequent flattening.
Shapton KUROMAKU is the first series of colour-coded sharpening stones in the world, where each colour represents a different grit size according to the Japanese JIS standard. The practical plastic case makes stone storage easier and can also be used as a stone holder during sharpening.
Shapton sharpening stones excel at coarse blade sharpening and at quickly establishing an effective, desired blade angle. The sharpening experience on Shapton KUROMAKU stones will be quite different from the sharpening experience on stones from other manufacturers. You will feel the relative hardness of the stones and find that you are constantly checking to see if you are actually grinding the blade. In fact, however, you are removing material, and surprisingly quickly.

Unlike traditional whetstones, SHAPTON stones do not polish the blade to a high shine; instead, they leave a very fine matte finish. It is uncertain whether this affects the final effective sharpness, but it is well known that some of the best and most expensive Japanese natural stones also do not leave a mirror finish, and the ultimate sharpness achievable with these stones is rightly unparalleled.
SHAPTON stones have very low moisture absorption, so sharpening can be started immediately after wetting the stone. It is therefore very important not to leave these stones in water for too long; 5-10 minutes for coarse stones is more than sufficient, and polishing stones (from JIS #4000) should only be submerged for a short time. SHAPTON stones are made of ceramic powder with a synthetic resin binder and are therefore more sensitive to moisture than 'sintered' stones, such as Zanmai or Matsunaga stones.
Despite all this, these water stones become concave with use and require regular re-flattening. Our flattening stones RISAM do an excellent job of this. A flat stone is essential for effective sharpening, especially of flat chisels and knives with a wider blade.
