Rubber Wood Cutting Boards – Brazilian Rubber Tree

Discover wooden cutting boards made from Brazilian rubber tree wood in several sizes and design combinations. Choose a compact board for everyday cutting, a robust work surface or a large-format model weighing approximately 10 kg.

Which Rubber Wood cutting board should you choose?

What is Rubber Wood?

Rubber Wood is the English term for the wood of the rubber tree, most commonly the Brazilian rubber tree Hevea brasiliensis. It is not rubber or a rubber-like material, but genuine wood with a light and natural appearance.

Individual sections of wood may vary in shade, grain and natural markings. These differences are not defects, but a normal characteristic of natural materials, making every cutting board unique.

Independent laboratory testing

TÜV SÜD and SGS – material verification and testing for kitchen use

With Dellinger cutting boards, we pay attention not only to the choice of wood and quality of workmanship, but also to the safety of the materials used and their behaviour when coming into contact with food.

Independent TÜV SÜD laboratory test reports are available for selected samples of finished cutting boards, together with a supplementary SGS laboratory report for the adhesive used in production.

Finished cutting boards

TÜV SÜD – food-contact testing

Selected samples of kitchen cutting boards made from rubber wood and acacia wood were subjected to laboratory testing by TÜV SÜD.

The purpose of the testing was assessment with reference to German LFGB requirements (§§ 30 and 31) and Regulation (EC) No 1935/2004 on materials and articles intended to come into contact with food.

The tested samples achieved an overall PASS result in the tests performed.

Test Tested sample result Requirement / recommended level
Specific migration of formaldehyde < 3 mg/kg ≤ 15 mg/kg
Pentachlorophenol (PCP) < 0.05 mg/kg ≤ 0.1 mg/kg
Extractable lead (Pb) < 0.1 mg/kg ≤ 3 mg/kg
Extractable cadmium (Cd) < 0.1 mg/kg ≤ 0.5 mg/kg
Extractable mercury (Hg) < 0.1 mg/kg ≤ 0.3 mg/kg
Sensory test – odour transfer Grade 1 < 2
Sensory test – taste transfer Grade 1 < 2

In the sensory test, Grade 1 represents only a barely perceptible change in taste or odour. The recommended test level was below Grade 2.

SGS – laboratory testing of the adhesive used

A sample of the adhesive used in the manufacture of wooden products was also subjected to separate laboratory testing by SGS.

The testing included, in particular:

  • lead (Pb),
  • cadmium (Cd),
  • mercury (Hg),
  • hexavalent chromium Cr(VI),
  • PBB,
  • PBDE,
  • phthalates DBP, BBP, DEHP and DIBP.

For the substances monitored, no values were detected in the tested sample above the detection limits of the methods used. The tested sample complied with the applicable limits of RoHS (EU) 2015/863.

The SGS report provides supplementary documentation for the tested adhesive sample. The SGS RoHS report itself is not a standalone certification of the finished product for direct food contact.

What does the testing confirm?

The tested cutting-board samples met the requirements of the laboratory tests performed for formaldehyde migration, pentachlorophenol, extractable lead, cadmium and mercury, and sensory properties. The supplementary SGS report also verifies selected hazardous substances in the tested adhesive sample.

Laboratory test results apply to the specific tested samples identified in the individual reports.

A practical work surface and a distinctive kitchen accessory

A cutting board should primarily be selected according to the amount of food being prepared, the available worktop space and the way it will be used. A smaller board is easy to store and handle, while a thick large-format board offers more working space and feels more stable thanks to its greater weight.

In addition to the natural look of rubber wood, the range also includes combinations with sapele, acacia or beech. Different wood tones create decorative patterns, allowing the board to remain on the worktop as part of the kitchen interior.

Several sizes From a compact 30 × 20 cm board to a large 60 × 40 cm work surface.
Solid construction Model thicknesses range from 2 to 6 cm. Thicker versions are intended for users looking for a robust working base.
Natural wood grain Each piece may vary slightly in shade, structure and arrangement of the individual wooden sections.
Suitable for quality knives A wooden surface is gentler on kitchen knife edges than hard surfaces made from glass, stone or ceramic.

Overview of Rubber Wood cutting boards

Size Wood used Character Recommended use
30 × 20 × 2 cm Rubber wood, sapele and acacia Compact, decorative design Fruit, vegetables, bread and smaller ingredients
36 × 24 × 2.5 cm Carbonised rubber wood and light beech Contrasting geometric pattern Everyday food preparation at home
43 × 30 × 4 cm Rubber wood Robust board with lacquered surface Regular cutting of meat, vegetables and other ingredients
60 × 40 × 6 cm Rubber wood Reversible, approx. 10 kg, integrated handles Larger-scale preparation in a spacious kitchen

Selection tip: Before ordering, mark the size of the cutting board directly on your worktop. This makes it easy to see whether enough space remains for bowls, prepared ingredients and safe knife work.

Large-format cutting board 60 × 40 × 6 cm

The largest model in the category offers a generous work surface for preparing larger quantities of meat, vegetables and other ingredients. A weight of approximately 10 kg contributes to stability, but also requires care when moving the board.

Integrated handles are built into the sides of the board to make it easier to lift and carry.

The board is packed in durable cardboard packaging, making it an interesting gift for keen cooks or barbecue enthusiasts.

Safety when handling a heavy cutting board Do not leave the large-format model near the edge of the worktop. A fall from a board weighing approximately 10 kg may damage flooring, kitchen equipment or cause injury. Always carry it with both hands and place it only on a firm and stable surface.

How to care for a wooden cutting board

Hand wash only After use, clean the board with a soft sponge, warm water and a small amount of mild detergent.
Do not soak Do not leave the wood immersed in water and do not wash the board in a dishwasher.
Allow it to air dry Dry the board immediately after washing and stand it upright so that air can circulate around both sides.
Renew the wood protection Once the original protective layer begins to wear, treat the dry board with a product intended for wooden cutting boards.

The lacquered surface on some models provides initial protection for the wood. In areas used regularly for cutting, however, it may gradually wear away. Once the surface begins to feel dry or loses its original protection, use an oil or wax intended for surfaces that come into contact with food.

Do not use ordinary cooking oils: sunflower, olive and other edible oils may become rancid over time. A product specifically intended for wooden cutting boards is more suitable.

Use and hygiene guidelines

  • Place the board on a clean, level and stable work surface.
  • Before cutting, check that the board does not slide or wobble.
  • After preparing raw meat, clean the surface thoroughly without delay.
  • It is practical to use separate boards for raw meat and foods intended for direct consumption.
  • Do not expose the wood to hot cookware, open flames or prolonged direct sunlight.
  • Deal with deep cuts and significant surface damage promptly so that the board remains easy to clean.

Frequently asked questions about Rubber Wood cutting boards

What does Rubber Wood mean?

Rubber Wood is the English term for rubber tree wood. It is not rubber or a rubber-like material, but genuine natural wood.

Have the cutting boards been tested for food contact?

Selected samples of rubber wood and acacia wood cutting boards were tested by the independent TÜV SÜD laboratory with reference to German LFGB requirements (§§ 30 and 31) and Regulation (EC) No 1935/2004. The tests included formaldehyde migration, pentachlorophenol, extractable lead, cadmium and mercury, as well as sensory evaluation of taste and odour transfer. The tested samples achieved a PASS result.

What were the TÜV SÜD laboratory test results?

Formaldehyde migration was below 3 mg/kg against a maximum requirement of 15 mg/kg. Pentachlorophenol was below 0.05 mg/kg against a limit of 0.1 mg/kg. Extractable lead, cadmium and mercury were all below 0.1 mg/kg and below their respective limits. Both taste and odour transfer received Grade 1 in the sensory test, against a recommended level below Grade 2.

Has the adhesive used in production also been tested?

Yes. A sample of the adhesive used was laboratory tested by SGS for selected hazardous substances including lead, cadmium, mercury, hexavalent chromium, PBB, PBDE and the phthalates DBP, BBP, DEHP and DIBP. The tested sample complied with the applicable limits of RoHS (EU) 2015/863.

Which cutting board is suitable for everyday home use?

For everyday use, the medium 36 × 24 cm size or the more robust 43 × 30 cm version is often practical. The choice depends mainly on available worktop space and the amount of food usually prepared.

Who is the 60 × 40 × 6 cm board suitable for?

The large-format board is intended for spacious kitchens and larger-scale preparation of meat, vegetables and other ingredients. Its weight of approximately 10 kg should be taken into account.

Can a wooden cutting board be washed in a dishwasher?

No. High temperatures, prolonged moisture and detergents may damage both the wood and its surface finish. Clean the board by hand only.

How should the cutting board be dried?

Dry it immediately after washing and then stand it upright so that air can circulate around both sides.

What should I do when the lacquered surface wears?

The protective layer may gradually wear in areas used for cutting. Maintain clean, dry wood with a product intended for kitchen cutting boards and surfaces that come into contact with food.

Can the board be treated with olive oil?

Ordinary cooking oils are not ideal for long-term maintenance because they may become rancid. Use an oil or wax specifically intended for wooden cutting boards instead.

Are differences in wood grain and colour a defect?

No. Differences in colour, grain and structure are natural characteristics of wood. Each cutting board may therefore look slightly different from the product photos.
