Why choose eucalyptus Binchotan-style charcoal?

Eucalyptus Binchotan-style charcoal has a high density and burns more slowly than ordinary lump charcoal. Once thoroughly lit, it provides intense and stable heat suitable for quickly searing meat as well as accurately cooking smaller portions.

Fully glowing charcoal produces little smoke and does not unnecessarily overpower the natural flavour of quality ingredients. This is especially useful when preparing fish, seafood, vegetables, thin slices of meat and traditional yakitori skewers.

This is Binchotan-style charcoal made from eucalyptus wood. Traditional Japanese Binchotan is primarily associated with ubame oak. The eucalyptus version offers a similar style of use: high density, long-lasting heat and cleaner grilling.

Long burning time

The dense structure of the charcoal slows down burning and reduces the need for frequent refuelling during grilling.

Intense and stable heat

The charcoal is suitable for quickly searing surfaces, preparing steaks and yakitori, and accurately grilling smaller portions.

Low smoke after ignition

Once it reaches full heat, the charcoal burns more cleanly and does not overpower the flavour of ingredients with excessive smoke.

Practical 2.5 kg pack

The pack meets the needs of smaller grills, is easy to carry and does not take up unnecessary storage space.

Ideal fuel for a tabletop Hibachi grill

Binchotan-style charcoal is traditionally associated with preparing small portions of meat, fish, vegetables and skewers over intense direct heat. This makes it an excellent choice for the Dellinger Smoke&Fire Black Matte tabletop Hibachi grill.

In the smaller Hibachi firebox, you can take advantage of the charcoal’s ability to maintain concentrated heat without using a large quantity of fuel. Start with a smaller amount and arrange the charcoal so that an even layer of heat forms beneath the ingredients.

Recommended combination Binchotan + tabletop Hibachi grill A compact combination for yakitori, fish, prawns, vegetables and small portions of meat prepared directly over the heat. View the Hibachi grill ›

Also suitable for small ceramic kamado grills

The practical 2.5 kg pack is also suitable for compact ceramic grills such as the Dellinger Smoke&Fire 16″ Green Matte Kamado.

The ceramic body of the grill works well with accumulated heat and airflow control. Combined with slowly burning charcoal, you can prepare ingredients over direct heat or use indirect grilling.

Because Binchotan-style charcoal creates intense heat, start with a smaller quantity in a compact kamado. Regulate the temperature primarily using the lower and upper air vents in accordance with the grill instructions.

For small ceramic grills Binchotan + Kamado Smoke&Fire 16″ A suitable combination for intense direct heat and more economical indirect grilling in a compact kamado. View the Kamado 16″ ›

What can you prepare?

Ingredient Suitable grill Recommendation
Yakitori and small skewers Hibachi Spread the charcoal into an even layer and turn the skewers regularly
Steaks and smaller portions of meat Hibachi or Kamado 16″ Sear the surface over direct heat and finish thicker pieces away from the hottest zone
Fish and seafood Hibachi or Kamado 16″ Use a clean grate and monitor the distance between the ingredients and the heat
Vegetables Hibachi or Kamado 16″ Place smaller and delicate pieces away from the most intense part of the heat
Indirect grilling Kamado 16″ Regulate the temperature using the airflow and suitable fuel placement

How should the charcoal be lit?

Binchotan-style charcoal is very dense and can therefore take longer to light than ordinary lump charcoal. Allow sufficient time and ensure a good supply of air.

  1. Remove old ash so that air can flow freely to the fuel.
  2. Use a chimney starter or a natural firelighter intended for grilling.
  3. Ensure sufficient airflow. Dense charcoal needs plenty of oxygen during ignition.
  4. Wait until it is thoroughly glowing. Only then transfer the charcoal to the grill and spread it evenly.
  5. Begin grilling once the heat has stabilised and the smoke created during ignition has subsided.
Do not use petrol, alcohol or other unsuitable flammable liquids

Use only accessories intended for lighting a grill. Unsuitable flammable substances can cause sudden flames, affect the taste of food and seriously endanger health.

How much charcoal should you use?

The advantage of the 2.5 kg pack is easy portioning for a smaller firebox. The exact quantity depends on the size of the grill, airflow, outdoor temperature and the required cooking time.

  • For a Hibachi, start with a smaller, even layer of glowing charcoal. Add more pieces as required.
  • For a Kamado 16″, adjust the quantity according to the required temperature and grilling time.
  • Do not overfill a small firebox. Binchotan creates intense heat and needs space for airflow.

Safety during use

Use only in a suitable grill Follow the instructions and safety guidance provided by the manufacturer of the specific grill.
Ensure sufficient ventilation Burning charcoal produces carbon monoxide. Do not use a Hibachi or ordinary kamado grill in an enclosed room, garage, tent, caravan or unventilated area.
Use heat-resistant gloves and tongs The charcoal, grate, ceramics and other parts of the grill can reach very high temperatures.
Keep children and pets away The grill and charcoal remnants can remain dangerously hot for a long time after grilling has finished.
Completely extinguish charcoal remnants before disposal Charcoal that appears extinguished may still be glowing inside. Only dispose of it once it has completely cooled.

Storage

Store the charcoal in a dry environment away from rain and ground moisture. Damp charcoal is more difficult to light and may take considerably longer to reach full heat.

  • Close the packaging securely after removing the required quantity.
  • Keep out of reach of children.
  • Do not store near an open flame or a strong heat source.
  • Prevent prolonged exposure to water and airborne moisture.
