Chukyō Kenma Sabitoru Coarse #46 rust eraser
A practical flexible cleaning tool for fast removal of surface rust, stains and dirt from steel blades, tools and other metal objects. Its compact 65 × 40 × 9 mm size allows precise and well-controlled work.
The Japanese Sabitoru Coarse rust eraser works much like an eraser: place it against the affected area and use controlled strokes to mechanically remove corrosion and stubborn dirt. The very coarse #46 grit is intended primarily for heavier surface rust, tougher deposits and the first stage of restoring durable metal surfaces.
It is useful for maintaining heavily corroded steel blades, scissors, hand tools, metal components and for cleaning the surface of sharpening stones. It can be used dry or slightly damp. Grit #46 is highly abrasive and may leave visible marks, so it is not suitable for routine cosmetic cleaning of polished, Damascus, painted or otherwise decoratively finished surfaces.

How to use the rust eraser correctly
- Place the blade or object safely on a stable surface. When working on a knife, always move away from the edge.
- Test a small area first, especially on polished, Damascus, blackened, painted or decoratively finished surfaces.
- Use the eraser dry or slightly damp. Start with minimal pressure.
- Move in the direction of the original grind or satin finish of the surface. Do not clean in circular motions unless you intentionally want to alter the appearance of the surface.
- Check the result continuously and stop as soon as the rust or stain has disappeared.
- After cleaning, rinse the object and dry it immediately. On a carbon-steel blade, you can then apply a thin layer of oil suitable for knife maintenance.
Important notice
Sabitoru Coarse #46 is a very coarse abrasive cleaning product. It can create visible scratches, remove patina or significantly alter the gloss and texture of the surface. Do not rub it across the knife edge itself, do not use excessive pressure and always test it first on a less visible area. It is not intended as a substitute for a sharpening stone or for sharpening the edge.

Care and storage
After use, rinse the rust eraser to remove loosened dirt and metal particles, allow it to air-dry and store it in a dry place. It gradually wears down during use, which is a natural characteristic of this type of cleaning tool. Do not use it if it is contaminated with particles that could significantly scratch the surface being cleaned.

It can lighten or remove it because it mechanically removes the oxidised surface layer. Therefore, clean only the areas where intervention is genuinely necessary.
Can I sharpen the knife edge with it?
No. Sabitoru is intended for cleaning the surface, not for creating or restoring the edge. Use a suitable sharpening stone for sharpening.
Is it suitable for severe and deep corrosion?
It is intended mainly for surface rust. Deep corrosion and pitting in the steel may require professional regrinding or restoration.
What should I do with the knife after removing the rust?
Rinse the blade thoroughly, dry it immediately and, for carbon steel, apply a thin layer of protective oil suitable for knives if needed.
How long does the rust eraser last?
Its service life depends on the size of the areas being cleaned, the amount of rust and the pressure applied. It gradually wears down during use, which is normal.
