Chukyō Kenma Sabitoru Medium #120 rust eraser

A versatile flexible cleaning tool for effective removal of surface rust, stains and dirt from steel blades, tools and other metal objects. Its compact 65 × 40 × 9 mm size allows precise and well-controlled work.

The Japanese Sabitoru Medium rust eraser works much like an eraser: place it against the affected area and use gentle strokes to mechanically remove corrosion and adhered dirt. The abrasive #120 grit is particularly suitable for moderate surface rust and localised cleaning where you want to keep the process under control.

It is useful for maintaining kitchen knives made from both carbon and stainless steel, scissors, hand tools, metal cookware and for cleaning the surface of sharpening stones. It can be used dry or slightly damp. Because it is abrasive, it may leave marks depending on the pressure applied and the surface finish – always test it first on a less visible area.

Why choose Sabitoru Medium #120

Targeted rust removal

Allows you to clean a specific affected area without having to immerse the entire tool in a chemical product.

Medium-fine #120 version

A balanced choice for common to moderately heavy surface corrosion, stains and adhered dirt.

Easy to use

The flexible block is comfortable to hold, can be cut down to size if needed and used dry or slightly damp.

Made in Japan

This Chukyō Kenma product is made in Japan and designed for practical maintenance of steel surfaces.

How to use the rust eraser correctly

  1. Place the blade or object safely on a stable surface. When working on a knife, always move away from the edge.
  2. Test a small area first, especially on polished, Damascus, blackened, painted or decoratively finished surfaces.
  3. Use the eraser dry or slightly damp. Start with minimal pressure.
  4. Move in the direction of the original grind or satin finish of the surface. Do not clean in circular motions unless you intentionally want to alter the appearance of the surface.
  5. Check the result continuously and stop as soon as the rust or stain has disappeared.
  6. After cleaning, rinse the object and dry it immediately. On a carbon-steel blade, you can then apply a thin layer of oil suitable for knife maintenance.

Important notice

Sabitoru is an abrasive cleaning product. It can create fine scratches, lighten patina or alter the gloss and texture of the surface. Do not rub it across the knife edge itself, do not use excessive pressure and always test it on sensitive surfaces. It is not intended as a substitute for a sharpening stone or for sharpening the edge.

Where you can use it

Surface or object Suitable use Recommendation
Kitchen knives Surface rust, stains and unwanted patina Work in the direction of the grind and away from the edge itself.
Scissors and tools Light corrosion and adhered dirt on steel Protect joints, bearings and lubrication points from abrasive particles.
Metal cookware Local stains and surface corrosion After cleaning, thoroughly wash any surface intended for contact with food.
Decorative surfaces Only after a successful test It may affect polishing, colour, coating, Damascus contrast or blackening.
Sharpening stones Removal of metal particles and dirt from the surface Use with water and even pressure; the eraser does not replace a flattening stone.

Care and storage

After use, rinse the rust eraser to remove loosened dirt and metal particles, allow it to air-dry and store it in a dry place. It gradually wears down during use, which is a natural characteristic of this type of cleaning tool. Do not use it if it is contaminated with particles that could significantly scratch the surface being cleaned.

Rust is always best dealt with early. After removing the corrosion, eliminate its cause as well: wash the knife by hand, do not leave it soaking in water and dry it immediately after every use. You can find more blade-care products in the knife sharpening and maintenance category.

Frequently asked questions

What is Sabitoru Medium #120 designed for?

For mechanical removal of surface rust, stains, unwanted patina and adhered dirt from steel blades, tools and other metal objects.

What does grit #120 mean?

It indicates the medium version of the rust eraser. It is still an abrasive product, so only light pressure should be used and the result should be checked continuously.

Should I use it dry or with water?

Both methods are possible. For cleaning knives, we recommend starting with a slightly damp eraser and minimal pressure.

Can the rust eraser scratch the blade?

Yes. It is an abrasive tool and, depending on the pressure and surface finish, may leave fine marks or alter the gloss. Always test it first.

Is it suitable for Damascus and polished knives?

Only with great care. It may alter the Damascus contrast, satin texture or mirror polish. Test it first on an inconspicuous area.

Will it also remove patina from carbon steel?

It can lighten or remove it because it mechanically removes the oxidised surface layer. Therefore, clean only the areas where intervention is genuinely necessary.

Can I sharpen the knife edge with it?

No. Sabitoru is intended for cleaning the surface, not for creating or restoring the edge. Use a suitable sharpening stone for sharpening.

Is it suitable for severe and deep corrosion?

It is intended mainly for surface rust. Deep corrosion and pitting in the steel may require professional regrinding or restoration.

What should I do with the knife after removing the rust?

Rinse the blade thoroughly, dry it immediately and, for carbon steel, apply a thin layer of protective oil suitable for knives if needed.

How long does the rust eraser last?

Its service life depends on the size of the areas being cleaned, the amount of rust and the pressure applied. It gradually wears down during use, which is normal.
