89-layer Damascus steel – beauty with a purpose

At the heart of every blade is stainless 10Cr15CoMoV steel, hardened to 61 ± 1 HRC. This allows the creation of a very fine, sharp cutting edge that delivers lasting performance with proper care.

The cutting core is surrounded by a total of 88 layers of two different stainless steels. Together, they form an 89-layer construction that supports the hard core and creates the characteristic Damascus pattern.

In terms of composition and performance, 10Cr15CoMoV steel is often compared to Japanese VG-10 steel. However, it is not identical to VG-10, nor is it an exact standardized equivalent.

89 genuine layers

One cutting core surrounded by 88 outer layers of steel.

61 ± 1 HRC

Hardness suitable for a fine, precise and durable cutting edge.

Hand-finished edge

Vacuum hardening and hand sharpening ensure a high-quality cutting edge.

How is the distinctive Damascus pattern created?

The flowing pattern on the blade is neither printed nor applied as decoration. It is the result of the genuine multi-layer steel construction. Different steels respond differently to surface finishing, revealing their natural lines.

In the Pearl Damascus 89 Layers collection, the pattern is enhanced through controlled sandblasting without chemical etching. Fine abrasive particles mechanically treat the blade surface, creating a silky matte finish with a subtle relief.

By comparison, traditional chemical etching takes advantage of the different reactions of steel layers to an etching solution. Sandblasting works mechanically, changing the surface texture and the way light is reflected. Both methods can highlight genuine Damascus steel; neither method alone determines the quality of the cutting core.

A handle with a story thousands of years in the making

What truly sets the Pearl Damascus collection apart is its combination of natural materials originating from completely different environments – the desert, prehistoric times and the ocean.

American desert ironwood – the beauty of desert timber

Desert ironwood is an exceptionally dense hardwood native to the arid regions of the southwestern United States and northern Mexico. Its slow growth produces a compact structure and distinctive grain in warm brown tones. On the handle, it creates a natural contrast with the polished steel.

Fossilized mammoth molar – a touch of prehistory

The handle also features genuine fossilized material from a mammoth molar. Its irregular structure and mineral colouring developed through natural processes over an exceptionally long period.

Every segment has a unique pattern, meaning that individual knives may differ in appearance. This natural variation is one of the most fascinating details of the entire collection.

Black Lip Mother of Pearl – iridescent beauty

The end of the handle is decorated with natural Black Lip Mother of Pearl, originating from the inner shell layer of the black-lipped pearl oyster (Pinctada margaritifera).

Its colour is far from simply black. Depending on the angle of the light, it can reveal graphite, green, blue, bronze and purple tones. This optical effect originates from the fine layered structure of the mother-of-pearl.

Every mother-of-pearl detail has its own pattern and intensity of iridescence. Slight differences are a natural characteristic of the material.

Ergonomics and precision details

The oval profile with softly rounded lines fits comfortably in the hand. The handle supports both a traditional grip and a professional pinch grip and is suitable for right- and left-handed users. A polished SS304 stainless steel bolster provides the transition between blade and handle.

Did you know? No two Pearl Damascus handles have to look exactly alike. The individual patterns of the wood, fossilized material and mother-of-pearl make every knife visually unique.

How to choose the right Pearl Damascus knife

Marek's recommendation – which knife would I choose?

As a former chef, I would start by considering which knife you will actually use most often. If you are looking for one main kitchen knife, I recommend the Chef 200 mm. It is versatile, handles both smaller and larger ingredients, and offers enough blade length for smooth, continuous cuts.

If you prefer a more compact and manoeuvrable knife, I would choose the Santoku 180 mm. For anyone who prepares vegetables frequently, the Nakiri 175 mm is an excellent addition.

What I enjoy most about this collection is the combination of functionality and natural materials. These are not merely knives to put on display. They are tools you can genuinely cook with – and with proper care, they will bring you pleasure for many years.

A premium knife deserves proper care

Pearl Damascus is a fully functional kitchen tool, but its fine cutting edge and natural materials require careful handling.

  • Always wash the knife by hand and dry it immediately.
  • Never put it in the dishwasher or leave it soaking in water.
  • Use a wooden or suitable plastic cutting board.
  • Avoid glass, stone, ceramic and metal cutting surfaces.
  • Do not chop bones, frozen ingredients or other hard materials.
  • Maintain the edge with a quality sharpening stone and a gentle technique.
  • Protect the handle from impacts, sudden temperature changes and prolonged exposure to water.

Elegant wooden gift box

Every knife in this collection comes in an elegant wooden box. The combination of Damascus steel and exceptional natural materials makes it a distinctive gift for passionate home cooks, professionals and collectors.
