Sharpening Stone 3000 Shapton RockStar
Code: SHA-WA60416Product detailed description
Fine edge refinement for a smoother and cleaner cut
A premium Japanese-made synthetic sharpening stone with JIS #3000 grit that follows basic sharpening, smooths out sharpening marks and helps create a more refined cutting edge.
Shapton RockStar JIS #3000 is a fine water sharpening stone intended primarily for refining and smoothing an already formed edge. It performs best as the second step after a basic stone of approximately JIS #1000.
The JIS #3000 grit corresponds to an abrasive particle size of approximately 4 microns. The stone therefore helps remove more pronounced marks left by basic sharpening, refine the bevel and prepare the knife for cleaner cutting of vegetables, meat, fish and herbs.
Thanks to its dimensions of 210 × 70 × 10 mm, it provides sufficient working surface for standard kitchen knives. The hard and efficient structure of the RockStar range is also suitable for high-quality Japanese knives and harder knife steels.

What is JIS #3000 grit suitable for?
The Shapton RockStar #3000 is not intended primarily for repairing a very dull or damaged edge. Its role is to follow basic sharpening and improve the quality of the cutting edge.
- fine refinement of kitchen knives,
- smoothing marks left by a stone of approximately #1000,
- refining the bevel and removing a fine burr,
- regular care of high-quality European and Japanese knives,
- finishing the edge before optionally continuing to a finer grit,
- sharpening selected woodworking and gardening tools.
The #3000 stone does not replace basic sharpening
If the knife is dull, begin with a stone of approximately JIS #1000. A damaged edge or larger chips may require an even coarser stone. A fine #3000 stone would carry out the repair unnecessarily slowly.
Recommended sharpening progression
| Grit | Role | When to use it |
|---|---|---|
| #320 | Repair and heavier material removal | Damaged, very dull or deformed edge |
| #1000 | Basic sharpening | Restoring the working sharpness of an ordinarily dull knife |
| #3000 | Refining and smoothing | Finer finishing after basic sharpening |
| #6000 | Very fine finish | Advanced smoothing and finer bevel finishing |
A practical combination for home sharpening
For most high-quality kitchen knives, the combination of #1000 and #3000 represents a very practical two-step progression. The #1000 stone restores the edge, and the #3000 then refines and smooths it.
How to use the stone correctly
- Place the stone on a stable non-slip mat or in a suitable holder.
- Wet the working surface of the stone with clean water.
- Place the blade at the selected sharpening angle and do not change the angle during use.
- Sharpen evenly along the full length of the edge and use only light pressure.
- Gradually reduce the pressure at the end and make several very light alternating strokes.
- Rinse the knife, dry it immediately and inspect the edge against the light.
Do not press hard on a fine stone
When finishing on #3000 grit, use less pressure than during basic sharpening. Excessive pressure reduces control over the edge and may create an unnecessarily pronounced burr.
Care and storage
- Rinse the stone with clean water after use.
- Do not use detergents, oils or a dishwasher.
- Allow the stone to dry freely and thoroughly at room temperature.
- Do not dry it on a radiator or in direct sunlight.
- Do not store a damp stone in a closed box.
- Regularly check the flatness of the working surface.
With repeated sharpening, the working surface may gradually wear unevenly. To maintain accurate contact with the edge, flatten the stone as required using a suitable diamond or flattening block.
Safety during sharpening
The stone is not intended for ceramic knives. Guide the blade in a controlled manner while sharpening, keep your fingers out of the path of the edge and work only on a stable surface. Store both the stone and knives out of the reach of children.

Frequently asked questions
What is a JIS #3000 sharpening stone used for?
It is used for fine refinement, smoothing marks left by the basic stone and refining an already formed edge.
Can a dull knife be sharpened using only a #3000 stone?
This is possible with a slightly dull knife, but an ordinarily dull knife should preferably be sharpened first on a stone of approximately #1000 and then finished on #3000.
Is the Shapton RockStar #3000 suitable for Japanese knives?
Yes. The stone is also suitable for high-quality Japanese kitchen knives and harder knife steels.
Does the stone need to be soaked for a long time before use?
No. Simply wet the working surface with clean water before sharpening and keep it wet during use.
Which stone should be used before #3000 grit?
For standard home care, we recommend a JIS #1000 sharpening stone as the previous step.
Which stone can follow #3000 grit?
For an even finer bevel finish, you may continue, for example, on a JIS #6000 stone.
Can ceramic knives be sharpened on this stone?
No. This sharpening stone is not intended for ceramic knives.
Is it necessary to use a sharpening stone holder?
It is not essential, but the stone must be safely and securely positioned during sharpening. An adjustable non-slip holder makes the work considerably easier.
How do I know when the stone needs flattening?
If the working surface is hollow in the middle, the knife rocks during sharpening or the bevel forms unevenly, it is time to flatten the stone.
How should the stone be stored after sharpening?
Rinse it with water, allow it to air-dry at room temperature and store it in a dry place only when it is completely dry.

SHAPTON – Japanese specialist in sharpening stones
SHAPTON Co., Ltd. is a Japanese manufacturer of synthetic sharpening stones and accessories for precise edge maintenance. The brand is known for fast abrasive action, a stable structure and a wide choice of grits for kitchen knives and craft tools.
SHAPTON is based in the town of Mashiko in Japan’s Tochigi Prefecture. The company focuses on developing sharpening stones that allow fast, controlled and highly repeatable edge work. Its products are used by professional sharpeners, chefs, craftspeople and home users who want to maintain their knives by hand.
SHAPTON sharpening stones feature a high concentration of abrasive particles and a carefully designed bonding system. This allows them to remove material efficiently, provide clear feedback during sharpening and wear more slowly than many softer stones. The wide grit range makes it possible to repair a damaged edge, create a new bevel, restore ordinary working sharpness and carry out extremely fine final polishing.
You can find the complete selection in the SHAPTON sharpening stones category.
Why are SHAPTON stones so popular?
Fast abrasive action
The high abrasive content makes it possible to restore the bevel effectively even on harder modern steels. With correct technique, there is therefore no need to apply heavy pressure to the blade.
No long soaking required
SHAPTON stones are designed for quick preparation. Before sharpening, the surface is usually only moistened with water, allowing you to start working without a long wait.
Lower wear
The optimised bonding system helps use the abrasive particles more efficiently. The stones therefore retain their working properties for a relatively long time, although their flatness still needs to be checked regularly.
Wide range of grits
From coarse repair stones to extremely fine polishing stones. Users can create a progressive sharpening sequence according to the condition of the knife, the steel used and the desired result.
Main SHAPTON sharpening-stone ranges
SHAPTON Kuromaku
Kuromaku is the classic range of solid synthetic sharpening stones. Individual grits are colour-coded, making it easier to distinguish between multiple stones while working. Each stone comes with a practical plastic case that can also be used as a base during sharpening.
SHAPTON GlassStone
The GlassStone range uses a thin abrasive layer firmly bonded to a glass base. The glass support provides dimensional stability and makes even a thin abrasive layer easier to handle. The extensive grit selection allows users to build a progression from basic sharpening to an exceptionally fine finish.
SHAPTON RockStar
RockStar is a modern premium range combining strong abrasive performance, a uniform structure and a finely controlled result. It is also designed for hard blades and users who want fast work without long soaking.
Which SHAPTON grit should you choose?
The brand or product range itself does not influence the result as much as choosing the correct grit. A coarse stone removes steel quickly, while a fine stone smooths the marks left by previous sharpening and refines the finished edge.
| Grit | Suitable use | Who it is suitable for |
|---|---|---|
| #120–#500 | Repairing a damaged edge, changing the bevel and working on a very dull knife. | More experienced users and repair sharpening. |
| #1000 | Restoring ordinary working sharpness and creating a new cutting edge. | The best first stone for most kitchen knives. |
| #1500–#3000 | Smoothing the bevel and providing a finer finish after basic sharpening. | Home cooks and more demanding users. |
| #4000–#8000 | Fine finishing and polishing of high-quality kitchen knives. | Japanese knives and blades requiring a smooth finish. |
| #12000–#16000 | Extremely fine specialised polishing after the previous stages. | Experienced sharpeners and specific edge-surface requirements. |
A simple recommendation for beginners
When buying your first sharpening stone, begin with #1000 grit. Add a #3000 stone for a finer finish. A coarse stone around #320 or #500 makes sense when the edge is damaged or significantly dull.
Maintaining SHAPTON sharpening stones
During sharpening, the working surface of every water stone gradually wears and may become hollow in the centre. An uneven stone makes it harder to control the angle and can result in an irregular bevel. It is therefore important to clean the surface continuously and flatten it when necessary.
- Moisten the stone before use according to the instructions for the specific range.
- Keep sufficient water on the surface while sharpening.
- Remove sharpening slurry and metal particles after use.
- Check the flatness of the working surface regularly.
- Allow the stone to dry naturally away from direct heat.
- Store the dry stone so that it cannot fall or suffer mechanical damage.
Holders, lapping tools, cleaning discs and other equipment can be found in the sharpening accessories category.
Would you like to learn how to sharpen correctly?
A high-quality sharpening stone is only part of the solution. Maintaining a stable angle, creating a burr, applying pressure correctly and progressing through the individual grits are equally important.
