Sharpening Stone 6000 Shapton RockStar
Code: SHA-WA60517Product detailed description
Fine finishing and smoothing of an already sharpened edge
A premium synthetic sharpening stone made in Japan for final bevel smoothing, removing fine sharpening marks and achieving a refined edge.
Shapton RockStar JIS #6000 is a very fine water sharpening stone intended for the final stage of sharpening. It is used on an edge that has already been correctly formed on a coarser grit, usually after a JIS #3000 stone.
The JIS #6000 grit corresponds to an abrasive particle size of approximately 2 microns. The stone helps remove fine marks left by previous sharpening, smooth the bevel surface and finish the cutting edge for a smooth and precise cut.
The dimensions of 210 × 70 × 10 mm provide sufficient working surface for kitchen knives of different lengths. The high-performance structure of the RockStar range is also suitable for high-quality Japanese knives and hard knife steels.

Why choose the Shapton RockStar #6000?
| Very fine finish The #6000 grit smooths minor marks left by previous sharpening and helps create a refined cutting edge. |
| Cleaner and smoother cutting A finely finished edge reduces tearing of ingredients and is suitable for precise slicing of meat, fish, vegetables and herbs. |
| Suitable for hard steels The stone can also be used for high-quality Japanese kitchen knives and harder knife steels. |
| Quick preparation for use The stone does not require prolonged soaking. Simply wet the working surface with water before sharpening. |
The #6000 stone does not sharpen a dull knife from the beginning
The #6000 grit is intended for the final finishing of an already sharp knife. Restore a dull edge first on a stone of approximately #1000 and then refine it on #3000. Using the #6000 stone alone would be very slow and inefficient.

What is JIS #6000 grit suitable for?
- final smoothing of an already formed edge,
- removing fine sharpening marks left by the #3000 stone,
- fine finishing of kitchen knife bevels,
- reducing a fine burr left by previous sharpening,
- preparing a smooth edge for precise slicing,
- fine finishing of selected craft tools.
Is the finest edge always the best?
A very finely finished edge provides a smooth cut and performs well when precisely slicing meat, fish or delicate ingredients. For some everyday kitchen tasks, however, a certain microscopic “bite” in the edge may also be beneficial, which is preserved, for example, by a finish around #3000.
The choice of the final stone therefore depends on the type of knife and its intended use. For a universal kitchen knife, #3000 may be the final grit. You will appreciate the #6000 stone especially when you want to smooth the bevel further and achieve a finer cut.
Selection recommendation
If you are looking for a practical finish for an everyday kitchen knife, a #3000 stone is often sufficient. Choose #6000 grit for a finer finish, precise cuts and knives on which you want a more highly polished bevel.
Recommended sharpening progression
| Grit | Use | When to choose it |
|---|---|---|
| #320 | Repairs and rapid material removal | Severely dull or damaged edge |
| #1000 | Basic sharpening | Restoring working sharpness |
| #3000 | Refining | Smoothing the bevel and creating a practical kitchen finish |
| #6000 | Very fine finish | Final smoothing of an already sharp knife |
How to use the stone correctly
- Place the stone on a stable non-slip mat or in an adjustable holder.
- Wet the working surface with clean water.
- Use it only after the edge has been correctly formed on a coarser grit.
- Sharpen at the same angle as on the previous stone.
- Use only light pressure and controlled strokes.
- Make the final strokes alternately and with almost no pressure.
- Rinse the knife, dry it immediately and inspect the result.
Light pressure is crucial on a finishing stone
Heavy pressure may create a new burr and reduce finishing accuracy. Work slowly on the #6000 stone, maintain a consistent angle and reduce the pressure to a minimum at the end.
Care and storage
- Rinse the stone with clean water after use.
- Do not use oils, detergents or abrasive cleaning agents.
- Do not wash the stone in a dishwasher.
- Allow it to air-dry at room temperature.
- Do not dry it on a radiator or in direct sunlight.
- Do not store a damp stone in a closed box.
- Regularly check the flatness of the working surface.
If a hollow develops on the working surface, flatten the stone using a suitable diamond or flattening block. A flat surface is important for accurate bevel guidance and even contact between the edge and the stone.
Safety during sharpening
The stone is not intended for ceramic knives. Work only on a stable surface, keep your fingers out of the path of the edge and store both the stone and knives out of the reach of children.

Frequently asked questions
What is a JIS #6000 sharpening stone used for?
It is used for final bevel smoothing, removing fine marks left by previous sharpening and finishing an already sharp knife.
Can a dull knife be sharpened using only a #6000 stone?
Not efficiently. First sharpen a dull knife at approximately #1000 grit, then use #3000 and only afterwards #6000.
Which stone should be used before #6000 grit?
The recommended previous step is a JIS #3000 stone, which refines the marks left by basic sharpening.
Is the Shapton RockStar #6000 suitable for Japanese knives?
Yes. The stone is also suitable for high-quality Japanese kitchen knives and harder knife steels.
Does the stone need to be soaked for a long time before use?
No. Simply wet the working surface with clean water before sharpening and keep it wet during use.
Is #6000 grit suitable for every kitchen knife?
It can be used on many high-quality knives, but it is not always necessary. For universal kitchen use, a final grit of #3000 may be more practical.
Can ceramic knives be sharpened on this stone?
No. This sharpening stone is not intended for ceramic knives.
How much pressure should I use while sharpening?
Use only light pressure. Perform the final alternating strokes with almost no pressure so that the edge is finished gently.
How do I know when the stone needs flattening?
If the surface is visibly hollow, the knife rocks during sharpening or the bevel forms unevenly, flatten the stone.
How should the stone be stored after use?
Rinse it, allow it to air-dry at room temperature and store it in a dry place only when it is completely dry.

SHAPTON – Japanese specialist in sharpening stones
SHAPTON Co., Ltd. is a Japanese manufacturer of synthetic sharpening stones and accessories for precise edge maintenance. The brand is known for fast abrasive action, a stable structure and a wide choice of grits for kitchen knives and craft tools.
SHAPTON is based in the town of Mashiko in Japan’s Tochigi Prefecture. The company focuses on developing sharpening stones that allow fast, controlled and highly repeatable edge work. Its products are used by professional sharpeners, chefs, craftspeople and home users who want to maintain their knives by hand.
SHAPTON sharpening stones feature a high concentration of abrasive particles and a carefully designed bonding system. This allows them to remove material efficiently, provide clear feedback during sharpening and wear more slowly than many softer stones. The wide grit range makes it possible to repair a damaged edge, create a new bevel, restore ordinary working sharpness and carry out extremely fine final polishing.
You can find the complete selection in the SHAPTON sharpening stones category.
Why are SHAPTON stones so popular?
Fast abrasive action
The high abrasive content makes it possible to restore the bevel effectively even on harder modern steels. With correct technique, there is therefore no need to apply heavy pressure to the blade.
No long soaking required
SHAPTON stones are designed for quick preparation. Before sharpening, the surface is usually only moistened with water, allowing you to start working without a long wait.
Lower wear
The optimised bonding system helps use the abrasive particles more efficiently. The stones therefore retain their working properties for a relatively long time, although their flatness still needs to be checked regularly.
Wide range of grits
From coarse repair stones to extremely fine polishing stones. Users can create a progressive sharpening sequence according to the condition of the knife, the steel used and the desired result.
Main SHAPTON sharpening-stone ranges
SHAPTON Kuromaku
Kuromaku is the classic range of solid synthetic sharpening stones. Individual grits are colour-coded, making it easier to distinguish between multiple stones while working. Each stone comes with a practical plastic case that can also be used as a base during sharpening.
SHAPTON GlassStone
The GlassStone range uses a thin abrasive layer firmly bonded to a glass base. The glass support provides dimensional stability and makes even a thin abrasive layer easier to handle. The extensive grit selection allows users to build a progression from basic sharpening to an exceptionally fine finish.
SHAPTON RockStar
RockStar is a modern premium range combining strong abrasive performance, a uniform structure and a finely controlled result. It is also designed for hard blades and users who want fast work without long soaking.
Which SHAPTON grit should you choose?
The brand or product range itself does not influence the result as much as choosing the correct grit. A coarse stone removes steel quickly, while a fine stone smooths the marks left by previous sharpening and refines the finished edge.
| Grit | Suitable use | Who it is suitable for |
|---|---|---|
| #120–#500 | Repairing a damaged edge, changing the bevel and working on a very dull knife. | More experienced users and repair sharpening. |
| #1000 | Restoring ordinary working sharpness and creating a new cutting edge. | The best first stone for most kitchen knives. |
| #1500–#3000 | Smoothing the bevel and providing a finer finish after basic sharpening. | Home cooks and more demanding users. |
| #4000–#8000 | Fine finishing and polishing of high-quality kitchen knives. | Japanese knives and blades requiring a smooth finish. |
| #12000–#16000 | Extremely fine specialised polishing after the previous stages. | Experienced sharpeners and specific edge-surface requirements. |
A simple recommendation for beginners
When buying your first sharpening stone, begin with #1000 grit. Add a #3000 stone for a finer finish. A coarse stone around #320 or #500 makes sense when the edge is damaged or significantly dull.
Maintaining SHAPTON sharpening stones
During sharpening, the working surface of every water stone gradually wears and may become hollow in the centre. An uneven stone makes it harder to control the angle and can result in an irregular bevel. It is therefore important to clean the surface continuously and flatten it when necessary.
- Moisten the stone before use according to the instructions for the specific range.
- Keep sufficient water on the surface while sharpening.
- Remove sharpening slurry and metal particles after use.
- Check the flatness of the working surface regularly.
- Allow the stone to dry naturally away from direct heat.
- Store the dry stone so that it cannot fall or suffer mechanical damage.
Holders, lapping tools, cleaning discs and other equipment can be found in the sharpening accessories category.
Would you like to learn how to sharpen correctly?
A high-quality sharpening stone is only part of the solution. Maintaining a stable angle, creating a burr, applying pressure correctly and progressing through the individual grits are equally important.
